MANCHESTER: New training academy for Metrolink operator

Today (Monday) saw the opening of new training facilities at the Metrolink depot on Queens Road by the network’s operator, Metrolink RATP Dev.

The academy was officially opened by Cllr Andrew Fender , the Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee (TfGMC), who cut the ribbon on the new premises.  He was joined by Metrolink employees and managing director of Metrolink RATP Dev, Chris Coleman.

The opening forms part of the Metrolink operator’s approach to the training of its 600 employees who range from drivers, vehicle technicians, control room operators and Passenger Services Representatives (PSRs).

The new academy now boasts state-of-the-art technology and includes an E-learning suite and a driver training room, allowing new and existing drivers to learn new routes and procedures using a driver simulator.

The facilities will also serve as a leadership academy for Metrolink RATP Dev’s managers as it prepares to develop future leaders of the business.

Chris Coleman, managing director of Metrolink RATP Dev, said:

“The launch of the new academy is a result of the investment we’re making into our people and today was an exciting milestone for our business.  As the Metrolink network continues to change and expand, we do too as an operator and it’s vital our employees are given the right support and training as the business moves forward.

“The new facilities and technology will also increase efficiency in how we deliver training to our employees, through our E-learning software and the driver simulator, and provides a solid foundation to nurture new and existing colleagues as the company grows.”

Cllr Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, added:

“It was a pleasure to open the new training academy for Metrolink RATP Dev today and it was clear a lot of time and investment had gone into ensuring the new facilities would exceed expectations and provide a high standard of training.

“As the expansion of the Metrolink network continues at pace we have to find innovative ways in which to train and support the people delivering the project. This latest development from Metrolink’s operator provides a sustainable solution in preparation for future extensions to the network. “
